Lost - Season 5 so far

Very quickly (and yes, spoilers if you haven't been watching. Massive spoilers.):

  • Flaming arrows?
  • Sayid kills people with his feet? And a dishwasher?
  • Benjamin mother-fraking Linus?
  • Penny and Charlie?
  • Daniel Faraday's unsettling past?
  • Jughead is still out there.
  • Time travel? Exploring the island not only in space but in history? And putting an end to time travel?
  • Sure - they spent a little too long off the island, but the stuff that happened there at the very end was fascinating.
  • Sawyer and his band of sarcastic geniuses joining the Dharma Initiative? In 1974? For three years? Let me rephrase: Sawyer has been a happy and productive part of the Dharma Initiative for three years. W.T.F?
  • Killing off nearly all the remaining survivors of Oceanic Flight 815? And then crashing another fraking plane on the island?
I honestly have no idea where this show is going to go next. It's like Dollhouse in that respect. Hatches? Numbers? Frak that. We have just watched a team of writers dismantle their own premise, bury the parts, and simultaneously all drop acid. What happens from this point on is going to be fascinating.

Oh yeah, and ... THE STATUE IS BACK!

Are you watching on broadcast TV or computer? We missed too many episodes at the start of the season to bother trying to watch it on TV but are keen to 'borrow' it from someone...

Broadcast, for the first time ever. It's not nearly as frustrating as I'd imagined - mainly because Sean, Helen and I have turned it into a weekly thing: a nice dinner followed by a watching of Lost filled with heckles, cheers, and theorising. Very sociable, very fun.

(The verification word is: 'mulledi')

Broadcast can't be too far behind download if you know all that. Season 4 and Season 5 of Lost have been great. More than making up for slow pace and random storylines of season 3 (Desmond/Charlie excluded in that because that part of season 3 was great).

Judging by the unread reviews in my feed, broadcast is about 4 eps behind the States.

I agree about the Desmond/Charlie stuff. I felt that their eps at the end of the season (especially the Charlie-centric 'Greatest Hits', where he writes the list) was some of the strongest stuff Lost has done: a focus on exploring and deepening Charlie's character, followed by watching him make a heroic sacrifice that advances the plot.

Deepen character + sympathise with character + advance plot by screwing with character = classic Lost, for me.

I think the Other developments in season 3 were necessary given where the story has gone. I think the fact that Ben has become such a major player also meant they needed to linger a little there in season 3, but I still think they spent too much time on unnecessary Jack/Kate/Sawyer stuff and additional Jack backstory.

It was a shame they couldn't have Eko for the whole season and draw out his story to the point where the monster judged him. I thought that was too quick.

The pacing of the whole Charlie, Hurly, Desmond story was much better though, as was the Locke storyline though I'm less convinced about the Locke backstory.

Finally I actually liked the episode where they explored the two minnows in season 3. It was really funny.

But that is my opinion of season 3. The rest of Lost has been really great.
