This is the most up-to-date summary about Veronica Mars' status that I know.
It looks like an official decision about whether to renew the show will be made on May 17.
The likely options are:
(1) spinning off into a new format (possibly four years in the future, when Veronica is a full-fledged FBI agent)
(2) continuing the story of Veronica at Hearst College
(3) axing the show.
At the moment, (1) and (3) appear equally likely.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the FBI idea.
On the negative - it takes away from the examination of Veronica's damaged past, and the investigation into the dark secrets of her community. Stuff that's at the heart of the show.
On the other hand - if she were to revisit Neptune as a fed, there'd now (as of ep 3.15) be a few central characters she could come into conflict with in really interesting ways. The four year gap gives characters like Logan a chance to change. And she'd now be the baby-faced agent who everyone underestimates.
